Clarivate report highlights importance of evolving data categorization to promote responsible research measures

LONDON, February 10, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Clarivate Plc (NYSE: CLVT), a global leader in providing reliable information and information to accelerate the pace of innovation, today released a report that examines the organization of the information in the global scientific community and presents new flexible data-driven citation-based classification approach. The report presents a new technology, developed in collaboration with the senior scientometrics academic team at the Center for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

Entitled “Data Categorization: Understanding Choices and Outcomes”, the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) â„¢ report describes the categorical research systems that exist around the world and the analytical consequences of their application to national and institutional data. It introduces a new and highly innovative approach to data aggregation based on reliable research data into the Web of Science â„¢ citation network. It also promotes the need for good data management practices to improve knowledge, skills and confidence and to ensure responsible use of search parameters.

The team’s research found that a categorization scheme informed by an article’s metadata is stronger than a scheme organized by human concepts, for example those that are journal-based, descendant, and use contributions. experts to divide the domains into related subcategories. Instead, a citation-based classification of articles and reviews gradually links individual items into larger units with shared characteristics based on the characteristics of the underlying data. This innovative approach demonstrated in InCites â„¢ Citation Topics more accurately represents microclusters, or specialties, provides more consistent content and improves citation standardization. It also gives the opportunity for new groups to appear, which was not previously possible with journal-based schemas.

Along with its wide range of data selections, tests and visualizations, InCites offers several choices of top-down data classifications and now also offers Citation Topics as a citation-based bottom-up classification. The current implementation of Citation Topics consists of 10 macro-themes, 326 meso-themes and 2,444 micro-themes, with a built-in monthly and annual update that will allow it to evolve over time.

Jonathan adams, Chief Scientist at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate and co-author of the report, said: “There are obvious strengths and weaknesses in the variety of classification systems currently available, and our goal in introducing the topics of quote is to promote best practices in data management in the responsible use of search metrics. “

Ludo Waltman, deputy director of the CWTS at Leiden University, said: “Bottom-up citation-based classifications play a prominent role in many of the scientometric analyzes we do at the CWTS. It’s great to see that InCites users will now also be able to benefit from these powerful classifications.

Joel Haspel, SVP Strategy, Science at Clarivate said, “This new report highlights the evolving nature of data categorization. It deals with how we recognize the natural divisions of knowledge and research and how we categorize publications for discovery, analysis, management and policy. the characteristics and limitations of how we categorize research publications are important for research management because they influence how we think about established and innovative research topics, how we analyze activity and performance research, and even the way we create organizations to do research. “
